Technology Can Help the Elderly

Portrait of a mature man using his digital tabletIt can be difficult caring for those with Alzheimer’s. Doctor’s appointments can easily be missed.

But technology can make it easier. A story on cnet.com says smartphone apps can help.

One, called Carely, allows the scheduling of doctor’s visits and posts updates on the patient’s condition, so family members are better informed.

The app also tracks medical information. For the family, it means less time phoning, texting and emailing.

There are many such apps that do similar things, the story says. One, called ScriptDash,  lets caregivers order medications by email or phone and has them delivered the next day.

But the technology is still slow in catching on. A survey showed less than 15 percent of families use these types of products.

Some say the reason is that many of the apps and products are too difficult to use. Others say caregivers just don’t have the time to research these types of products.
