Placement in High Quality Nursing Homes Means Less Risk for Placement in A Long-Term Care Facility

A new study identified that older adults who are put in high quality nursing home facilities had a decreased risk for placement in a long-term care facility. This research was recently published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

The researchers looked at the role of quality of the facility and how it affected a transition risk for long-term care facilities.

The research team looked specifically at whether or not the quality ratings of the facility help to predict long-term care placement. They explored the experiences of more than 500,000 people aged 65 and above and the researchers identified that a person’s risk of placement in a long-term care nursing home had a lot to do with the basic facility where they received initial care. Higher quality nursing homes had a much lower risk for placement in long-term care facilities.

The researchers concluded that it would be beneficial to learn more about the processes in place at these specific facilities that could help to explain variations in care and overall outcomes.
