New Study Shows Involvement in The Arts Helps the Elderly with A Better Quality of Life

According to a recent study out of Singapore, arts engagement and participation was associated with a better overall well being for the elderly on that continent. More than 1,007 people living in Singapore were evaluated for the study and those who were exposed to an art form experienced a better quality of life by as high as 4%.

Participating regularly in arts-related activities can encourage social behavior and decrease stress in anyone’s life, but the study shows that elderly people benefit significantly.

Three out of four seniors participating in that survey also acknowledged the benefits and value of the art in terms of a means of expression, inspiration and bridging differences for various generations and cultures.

Increased social support was also associated with attending arts events as well as better cognitive functioning and physical health. This can all help to keep the costs down for health events in elderly ages and is a great way to interact with others and to build a new social circle. Planning ahead for a meaningful retirement with access to plenty of opportunities like participating in the arts can lead to a better life overall.
