The process of estate planning and putting together a retirement and financial plan for your future is an important one, but it is one that should always be carefully considered after you look into an advisor’s credentials. No matter who you choose to work with in the creation of these critical documents for your future, you need to have the peace of mind that this person has the relevant training and experience and is qualified to assist you with the matters about which you are making an appointment.

While anyone could claim that they are a financial advisor, it is important to back up their experience with the credentials to verify expertise. You should never assume that a title alone illustrates experience and knowledge. Some of the most common credentials to include in your long term financial planning include:

  • A Certified Financial Planner; who is a professional with experience and education in insurance, investments, estate planning, taxes, retirement planning, budgeting, financial planning topics and employee benefits. These individuals have to pass a comprehensive test.
  • Certified Public Accountants: CPAs have extensive education specifically in accounting. Some of them will specialize in business income or personal taxes.
  • Enrolled Agents: These individuals are tested by the IRS and must pass continuing education.
  • Accredited Financial Counselor: These individuals have expertise in areas of learning the basics of personal finance, money management, getting out of debt and budgeting.
  • Personal Financial Specialist: This is a similar credential to a CFP, but in order to receive the distinction of PFS, a person must also be a Certified Public Accountant first.
  • Lawyers: Many legal issues directly impact your finances and it is strongly recommended that you identify an attorney who has an extensive background in the field and the experience working with past clients to back it up.

When you have a team of pros to help you with all your estate planning needs, you get peace of mind and long-term support for all your needs.
