When a loved one, especially a parent, moves in, it can be tricky.

A story on guideposts.org tells how one woman made it work when her mother moved in with her.

Her tips:

  • Expect the unexpected. There is no “one size fits all” manual for how to do this. Everybody is different. If you devise a routine, anything can happen to change it. For example, in her story, her mother was able to drive at first. Eventually, that changed.
  • Ask for help. You can’t do it alone. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. And to admit that this may be more about duty than about love.
  • Know you are not alone. More and more people are finding themselves in this position. We are here to help each other.
  • Look for surprises along the way. There can be gifts amid the difficulty.
