Many people who put off retirement are doing so for financial reasons but many of them are also considering the benefits of continuing to work longer for the brain as well. A new research study out of France indicates that working longer can have significant benefits for your mental capacity; something that an increasing number of older individuals are concerned about.ThinkstockPhotos-460717927

A large study of approximately half a million self-employed workers living in France suggested that work can help to push off dementia. Less risk of developing dementia was associated with delayed retirement. Work often gives people better mental health, a boost to their wellbeing and a sense of purpose in life.

With the social environment offered in the workplace and community with coworkers and colleague providing tasks to accomplish and learning new opportunities enables an individual to keep their brain sharp. When thinking about delaying retirement, it’s important to consult with your estate planning attorney as well as your financial advisor about the advantages and disadvantages of doing so. Consulting with an attorney as soon as possible is one of the best steps you can take when contemplating retirement goals.
