Unusual Estate Planning Provisions and You

Unusual provisions in wills could be important for addressing your particular needs. However, it could also confuse your family members if you are not careful. Including final arrangements and funeral arrangements may be a mistake inside your will, because by the time your family members have uncovered your will, it is typically days or even weeks after the burial has already taken place.

An unusual request stipulated in your will may need to be reflect in other documents or part of a conversation directly with your family members if you have not shared these interests with them already. If you wish for you ashes to be scattered in a particular place or to be buried somewhere where you haven’t made arrangements yet, you will want to discuss this well in advance because of the fact that many people may have already taken care of the final arrangements without knowing your specific wishes. Do not leave this as a surprise for your family members because it gives them little to no time to be able to react and come up with a plan that addresses your unique needs individually.

If you have an unusual final request, it’s also worth discussing directly with your experienced estate planning attorney. This gives you a chance to clarify your interests and your goals, and for your attorney to point out whether there are any obstacles or challenges associated with your decision to go this route.
